Use of Representations through “Multiplication Drawer” to Improve Students Ability in Mastering Multiplication Concepts and Basic Facts

This action research focused on mastering the multiplication concept and obtaining the basic multiplication facts among year 2 students. The main purpose of this research was to study the use of multiplication representations through “multiplication drawer” to improve student’s ability in mastering the multiplication concepts and ability to recall the basic multiplication facts. Participates consisted of sixty pupils from year 2 among two schools in the district of Bagan Datuk, Perak. Researcher implemented the use of multiplication representations through “multiplication drawer” for six weeks. The data were collected through pre and post-tests, questionnaire, observations and interviews. The data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. There were two aspects of the use of multiple representations via “multiplication drawer” that helped to improve understanding of the concept and obtaining the basic facts of multiplication. First, it helped students to see group and the members in the group more clearly in concrete. Secondly, it helped students to make connections between concrete representatives with basic multiplication facts and remember them.
