Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the effects of gender and school location towards the motivation to learn Physics among students. Research sample consisted of 192 secondary school students (78 male students, 114 female students and 85 urban students, 107 rural students) whowere taking the subject of Physics from five schools in the State of Penang. The Questionnaire of Motivation to Learn Physics adapted from ‘Motivational Structure Materials Survey’ had been administered to collect the required data. Independent sampel t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference in terms of the motivation to learn Physics among students as gender factor was accounted. The motivational mean score for the male students was found equivalent to the female students. However there was a significant difference in terms of the motivation to learn Physics among students based on the school location. It was found that the motivational mean score for the urban students were lower than the suburban students. Generally students were found to have a moderate level of motivation to learn Physics.
