Abstract

This study aims to develop and validate an instrument for assessing the classroom physical environment from students’ perspective in Malaysia. Based on literatures review, teachers interviews and analysis of existing instruments, the constructs were determine and items which contribute to the physical environment were developed. The validity and realibility of the instrument have been performed. The validity involved seven experts in education. A total of 900 students participated in this study. The result, a new develop instrument consists of six constructs, namely furniture, facilities, space, lighting, indoor air quality and colours. The factor loading for each item ranges from 0.45 to 0.93, while the reliability (alpha) was within 0.881-0.940. The result clearly showed that, the instrument have high validity and reliability and can be used in assessing the physical environment of science classrooms in Malaysia.
