Abstract

The textbook is one of the documents that support the teaching and learning process as a guide and reference source for a standard and uniform curriculum syllabus. Textbooks help the learning process by providing examples and activities to students. This study aims to explore the content presentation of the topic of Algebraic Expressions and Algebraic Formulas in Form 1 and Form 2 Mathematics textbooks covering content standards and learning standards, concept descriptions, technological applications and mathematical features. The study also aimed to identify activities and exercises based on constructs, assessment objectives and difficulty levels. Anecdotal analysis was used to display the findings of content presentation narratively, while a total of 133 activities and exercises were statistically analyzed using Microsoft Excel 365. Findings showed that content standards and learning standards were arranged by difficulty level by highlighting concept description and development, Geogebra technology applications and application of the Polya model in solving mathematical problems. Meanwhile, more activities and exercises in these two topics are in the construct of knowledge and understanding with moderate difficulty level. Therefore, this study should be seen as a significant study in the improvement of high-level questions in the future to form critical and creative thinking among students. Further studies of activity analysis and exercises that focus on mastery levels can be conducted to aid more systematic classroom assessment.
