Abstract

The aims of this study is to examine the effectiveness of using LOGO programming for learning mathematics in geometric topics on form two students’ achievement. This study used quasi-experiment with posttest-only design to compare students’ overall achievement and achievement in higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in the post-tests between the experimental and control group. 36 students were placed in the experimental group and 36 students were placed in the control group. Students in the experimental group underwent a process of learning mathematics using LOGO programming for six weeks, while the students in control group learning mathematics using PowerPoint slideshow in the same time frame. Two post-tests were used as the instrument for this study. Post-test I was conducted immediately after two weeks of the study to measure students’ achievement in Theorem Pythagoras topic. Meanwhile Post-test II was conducted immediately after six weeks of the study to measure students’ achievement in Coordinate topic. Data obtained from the post-tests were analyzed using independent t-test. The result showed that there is significant difference between experimental group (mean = 75.58, SD = 1.11) and the control group [(mean = 67.94, SD = 10:39); t (70) = 3.03, p <0.05]. Effect size (Cohen, 1992) was medium (Cohen’s d = 0.71). Meanwhile the result in HOTS domain showed that there is significant difference between the experimental group(min = 7:42, SD = 2.10) and the control group (mean = 5.39, SD = 2.03) with t (70) = 4.16, p <0.05. The effect size was large (Cohen’s d = 0.98).
