Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study is to determine values planned by three Year Five mathematics teachers in teaching problem solving. A sample comprising of three teachers who teach mathematics from a primary school in Selangor was selected. The teachers are trained. Data collected mainly through classroom observation, individual interviews, and documents. All the teaching sessions were video-taped while the interviews were audio-taped. Each participant was observed three times. Interview were carried out for each participants before and after teaching sessions. The finding showsthat all participants expressed same idea about the value. All the participants mentioned that the general education value as value and stated it is important for human being. The findings also shows that the values does not indicated in written daily lesson plan by the teachers. All the participants expressed some planned values only after being asked by researcher. About five values were planned such as justice, cooperation, diligence, meticulously and systematic. Almost all the planned values focus on self development. The research findings bring implication for educators and education in Malaysia that planning values in teaching is important aspect to form the next generation.
