Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the type of error often made by pupils Multiple Level Achievement in the Problem Solving mathematical in word through Newman Error Analysis Method. This qualitative research to be carried out during the four weeks in Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Lada 2, Kg Gajah, Perak. The respondents were 61 of year five pupils that were divided into three groups which is good achievers, moderate achievers and weak achievers. A set of written test questions and semi structured interviews were used as instruments. The findings reveals that the majority of the pupils were weak at finding the answer for the given word problems. The findings shows that good achievers are more likely to make mistakes on transformation, skills and coding process. Meanwhile, moderate achievers and weak achievers tend to make a mistake in reading, understanding and transformation stages. These research findings bring forth implications for mathematics educators and education in Malaysia, specifically as guidelines in contributions towards building a strong mathematical word problem solving foundation among students.
