Abstract

Reading and writing skills are early skills that need to be mastered by preschool children for their learning process to develop healthily and smoothly. Reading and writing skills can be mastered by their children gaining early exposure in early literacy skills as early as children born when they reach the age of six. The components of early literacy skills that children need to master are: (i) language and communication, (ii) print concepts and environmental print, (iii) phonemics and phonetics, (iv) reading and narrative comprehension; and (v) early writing. This concept paper aims to examine the reading and writing skills that need to be mastered by preschool children aged five and six years based on the Content Standards and Learning Standards enshrined in the National Preschool Standards Curriculum (KSPK) Revision 2017. Components of reading skills in KSPK Semakan 2017 consists of: (i) pre -reading skills, (ii) recognizing the letters of the alphabet, (iii) reading and reading syllables and content (iv) reading and understanding phrases and sentences, (v) reading and reading materials; and (vi) foster extensive reading. While the component of writing skills consists of: (i) mastery of pre -writing skills; and (ii) master writing skills. This concept paper aims to provide guidance to the preschool teachers to implement early literacy component in teaching the skills of reading and writing in Communications Backbone (Malay) according to the Standard Contents and Learning Standard contained in KSPK Revision 2017.
