Status of Traffic Noise in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu

The aim of this study is to evaluate the current traffic noise pollution in the city of Kuala Terengganu. Traffic noise is observed across the entire city of Kuala Terengganu such as Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, Masjid Sultan Mahmud, Flat Sri Kolam, Pasar Kedai Payang, Polytechnic Kota and the Water Front in April 2015. Observation of the traffic noise was conducted using Optimus Sound Level Meter, Cirrus model. Observations were conducted during working and non-working days as well as in difference timing which includes in the morning (8:00 to 10:00 am), noon (12.00 pm - 2.00 pm), evening (5:00 to 7:00 pm) and night (10:00 to 12:00 midnight). Observation traffic noise levels, includes the maximum (max), minimum (min) and average (Leq). The results showed that the overall value of traffic noise (dBA) at the Kuala Terengganu from all stations is 71.3 dBA for working days and to 70.6 dBA for non-working days. On working days, observation stations in the Mosque of Sultan Mahmud had the highest reading at 73.7 dBA Leq, while the lowest was 68.3 dBA at the Polytechnic Kota. Masjid Sultan Mahmud also recorded the highest reading on non-working days at 74.7 dBA and the lowest reading at Polytechnic Kota at 66.5 dBA. Traffic noise level recorded for all the stations exceeds the standards set by the Department of Environment (DOE) at 65 dBA. Thus, strict measures should be taken by relevant parties whether through legislative approach or not.
