Traffic Noise Pollution at Selected Settlements in Northern Corridor of Selangor
Keywords:
Traffic noise, Leq, northern corridor of SelangorAbstract
This study was conducted to identify the level of traffic noise in 16 selected stations in the Northern Corridor of Selangor. The studied traffic noise levels included the maximum (Max), the minimum (Min) and the average (Leq) values observed on working days and non-working days during four respective durations in the morning (7 to 9 am), at noon (12 to 2 pm ), in the evening (5 to 7 pm) and at night (10 pm to 12 am). The observations was made using a sound level meter i.e. Integrating Sound Level Data logger Extech Instruments Model 407 780. The results showed that the recorded traffic noise levels for all areas except of Bandar Sungai Buaya were exceeding the standards set by the Department of Environment (DOE); exceeding 65 dBA during the day and 55 dBA at night. Among the settlements that exceeded the level of traffic, noise includes those of Rasa, Batang Kali, Serendah and Bukit Beruntung. The study found that most of the observation stations recorded higher Leq value on the working days than the non-working day for all observation periods. Indirectly, this traffic noise pollution affects the quality of the environment and the humans in the vicinity. All parties have to take responsibility so that this problem can be dealt with properly, especially in terms of land use planning in the area as well as legal and non-legal measures that can be taken to overcome this traffic noise pollution.
