A Study on the Level of Sustainability Practices among Ministry of Education Preschool Pupils in Hulu Langat, Selangor

Abstract

Children are the ones that should not be neglected in giving exposure to environmental sustainability. Hence kindergarten or pre-school is a more structured and organized place for transition of knowledge at an early age. Therefore this study is intended to evaluate the level of knowledge, attitude and sustainability practice of Ministry of Education Malaysia pre-school students. Sustainability practice that has to be identified involve Reduce, Reuse and Recycle practices. Survey methods were used which involved 500 students in MOE preschools in Hulu Langat district, Selangor. Descriptive analysis that involves percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the level of sustainability. The result shows that the knowledge of materials that can or cannot be recycled (M = 2.87, SD = 0.32), respondents’ sustainability knowledge (M = 2.99, SD = 0.06) and attitude of sustainability variable (M = 2.99, SD = 0.04) is at a high level. While behavior of sustainability which involves the practice of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle only at a moderate level (M = 2.13, SD = 0.53). In an effort to give exposure to sustainability at an early age in formal education showed a good stage, but it is worrying if efforts are not aligned in hands-on activities, especially during the process of teaching and learning in shaping the behavior of sustainability. Preparedness of preschool teachers from the aspect of continuous training in various sustainability activities will help teachers and students to implement sustainability practices.
