Abstract

Tafsir al-Azhar is a great book of Quranic exegesis, which has significant impact on Quranic studies. HAMKA an important scholar in the Malay World had used several approachesin interpreting the message of the Quran with the intention of giving a clear understanding of Allah’s massage to the people. This study focuses on the method of Quranic exegesis that had been used by HAMKA. Therefore, this study focuses on HAMKA’s method in Quranic exegesis an approacheson Quranic text related to Islamic jurisprudence in his work Tafsir al-Azhar. Thus, examples from several verses of jurisprudence that are related to ibadat (personal rituals), muamalat (Islamic transactions), munakahat (Islamic family law) as well as jinayat (Islamic criminal law) will be highlighted. Library research had been undertaken to gather data for this study. Inductive, deductive and comparative methods had been used for analysing data. The findings show that HAMKA, in his work of Tafsir al-Azhar, had used methodologies of tafsir bi al-ma’thur, tafsir bi al-ra’y as well as tafsir bi isyari. He, however, emphasized more on tafsir bi al-ma’thur as compared to other methods.
