Abstract

Concentration of the Malaysian government in recent years to realize the seriousness of gifted education to explore a branch in the field of education that will shape the quality of human capital. Coping refers to cognitive efforts and actions to manage the psychological stress encountered. Understanding the detail of coping patterns of gifted pupils based on demographics is important in developing appropriate action plans. Therefore, this study aimed to identify if there are significant differences in the level of coping among gifted students by gender. The study involved 112 gifted students who pass the screening test PERMATA clever UKM 1 and UKM 2 2010 in primary and secondary government schools in Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and the Federal Territory of Putrajaya. The instrument used to measure coping levels students are Coping Ways Questionnaire modified instruments from Lazarus and Folkman (1988).Data were analyzed using statistical descriptive involving frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation and inferential analysis of the involving t-test. Descriptive findings show the majority of gifted students have moderate levels of coping. Inferential studies using t-test shows no significant difference between coping levels students gifted men and women. This means that appropriate interventions should be designed to enhance the gifted regardless of gender.
