Abstract

Writing can describe a variety of skills and abilities of a child. However, it is less discussed as the scope of discussion at children’s level is often the mechanical aspects of writing or handwriting. From a study conducted to examine the writing ability of pre-school children and primary school level 1 students, a Children’s Writing Assessment Rubric is developed. The rubric focuses on the key elements of children’s writing namely idea generation and language ability. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the process of developing the rubric. It is hoped that the rubric can be used to improve the teaching and learning of children’s writing.
