Abstract

The popularity of Facebook as social networking site's is undeniable. With a total of approximately 500 million registered users making it as the most popular social website. The use of social sites is related to the application provided. However, excessive use will cause users addicted to it. This study is among 300 students in three schools nearby. The internet addiction instruments by Young (1998) was modified to measure the Facebook addiction among school students. The study reveals that 65% of students are in level 2 followed by 27% in level 1 with the majority of respondents would visit Facebook from 1 to 3 hours a day. The favorites applications among the respondents was chatting with friends, add new contacts and upload pictures. The findings also showed that there was a significant correlation between Facebook addiction with a known members (r = .226, p = 0.05) and an unknown members (r = .128, p = 0.01). However, this relationship is weak. The results also showed that there was no significant difference on Facebook addiction among students with high, moderate and weak in academic performances. This study suggests that the parents should control the use of Facebook among their children as it can lead to become addicted to Facebook.
