Abstract

This article aims to discuss the patterns of voting in Sarawak in the 13th parliamentary General Election which was held on 5 May 2013. Sarawak is often regarded as a fixed deposit for Barisan Nasional (BN) in every election conducted in Malaysia. In this regard, this article examines polling patterns in the constituencies of Sarawak to review the direction of voting changes if available and attempts to explain why it happens or otherwise. A brief comparison is also made to analyze the parliamentary voting patterns in 2008 and 2013 to determine whether there were any changes and directions. Finally, this article discusses the political implications of Sarawak following the patterns of voting in 2013 elections on the politics of ethnic relations on Sarawak as well as in Malaysia on the whole.
