The Concept of Responsibility: Comparative Analysis between the Term "Duty" According to Immanuel Kant and the Term "Al-Taklif" According to Ibn Taymiyyah

There are similarities in the use of the term “duty” in Immanuel Kant’s thought and "al-Taklif" in Ibn Taymiyyah’s thought especially when narrowing to a discussion about responsibility. This paper demonstrates the similarity of the meaning of responsibility in the “duty” and “al-Taklif”. This paper also rejects the equation of the term “duty” used by Immanuel Kant with views of ancient philosophers and more similar to the “al-Taklif” that had long been adopted by usuliyyin (Islamic Jurispundence experts) including Ibn Taymiyyah. Obvious similarities between “duty” and “al-Taklif” is from the standpoint meaning of responsibility and its application in determining accountability. The primary focus is on the requirements that determine responsibility, this study found a common view of Ibn Taymiyyah and Immanuel Kant, which takes into account the requirements in determining human responsibilities. However, significant differences in power of will in Ibn Taymiyyah’s view which takes “act” into account to show the strength of will. Meanwile, Immanuel Kant takes “knowledge”into account to show the power of will. Although there are similarities on responsibility between Immanuel Kant's and Ibn Taymiyyah, both of them still have their own stands.
