Abstract

This article focuses on the cross-sectional variations of temperature in Ipoh City due to rapid development of the human habitat. This is influenced by the built-up area in the city center which is congested with buildings and vehicles as well as densely populated. The nucleus of the urban heat island is located in zone 2 at station 21 and station 22, which is the center of Ipoh City. The transverse section of temperature shows that temperature increased through the Kanthan industrial area and Sri Kanthan commercial and residential area with temperature of 29oC. The temperature dropped through the agricultural land at station 49 and the ex-mining lakes and swamps at station 50 with the recorded temperature of 27oC. The temperature rose again at station 54 and station 55 which is a busy area and the focus of many people, the Hulu Kinta Teacher Education Institute with temperature of 30oC. Urban heat island intensity is higher on weekdays at 5oC compared to weekends at 4oC. The urban heat island intensity is worst in the city centre during working days between 4.0oC to 5.0oC. Obviously, the variations of temperature vary by different land uses. Temperature variation is more pronounced in urban centers, industrial areas, areas crowded with people and vehicles as well as paved surface. Changes in the climate of the city require the cooperation of all parties involved in dealing with temperature changes in ensuring the sustainability of urban ecosystems in Ipoh City.
