Abstract

This study is aimed to explore values in mathematics teaching that were inculcated by secondary school mathematics teachers in Malaysia. Three Form Four mathematics teachers from two secondary schools in Selangor participated in the study. Qualitative data were collected through classroom observations, individual interviews, field notes and teaching documents. All teaching sessions were video-taped while the interviews were audio-taped for analysis. The finding of the study indicated that all participants did not consider the inculcation of mathematics educational values to be done explicitly. All participants expressed some incorporated mathematics educational values in their teaching only after being prompted during the pre or post interviews by the researcher. Mathematics education values that were inculcated implicitly include formalistic, instrumental, relevant, theoretical, accessibility and evaluation. In addition, the participants showed very little concern about inculcating mathematics educational values such as activist, relational and reasoning which were important in promoting critical thinking and active learning within the students.
