ANALYSIS ERRORS IN NEWMAN MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM SOLVING YEAR 3 (69 - 84)

Abstract

This study was aimed to better understand the error analysis methods of Newman involving mathematical problem solving. The study also assessed the impact of the methods on how students answer questions in the form of problem solving in maths and student attitudes toward mathematics, particularly in the form of mathematical problem solving. The objective of the study is to identify sources of Newman error analysis, identify the types of offenses algorithm in solving mathematical problems and identify students attitudes to mathematics, particularly in problem solving. This study involved 10 students of year three in a school in South Kinta District, Perak.The results showed that the problem is caused by problems with reading, comprehension, transformation of thought, skill application process, and make coding or writing algorithms. In addition, many respondents encounter errors in terms of negligence, wrong calculation, wrong writing figures and numbers, one of the places, not shown step, no calculation algorithms and weak in basic facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.The views of respondents to mathematics problem solving shows respondents are interested in this subject, but most of them do not like to answer the problem solving questions because having so much difficulties in it. Implications obtained is, teachers can detect at an early stage about the vulnerability of students and identify the cause of the error of Newmans and also in terms of the ability of thinking skills of their attitudes, interests and motivation of these skills.
