Analysis of Education Status of Science and Mathematics and the Preparation of the National Man Power of Science and Technology (10 - 24)

Every country needs to have a long term planning and preparation of their human resource development. In this respect, Malaysia has come out with a comprehensive long term strategies for her own human resource development until year 2020, that is when Malaysia is expected to become a fully developed country. Amongst the most critical work force needed by then are those that are related to science and technology. It is thought that the best way to prepare the science and technology work force of the future is to start with the schools. This document analysis was conducted briefly and qualitatively on upper secondary school (form 4 and 5) science curricula, namely chemistry, physics and biology,as well as mathematics curriculum, to find out, if the country’s aspiration to produce human resourse in science and technology has been considered and included in these curricula. This article will discuss the findings of the analysis and the status of science and technology education in Malaysia. Also will be discussed is the review of literature on the quality of tecahing and learning in science and mathematics in Malaysia. The article will conclude with reccommendations on how to increase the students’ interest in learning science and technology in schools.
