Impacts of the Bypass Phase 2 Projects toward the Locals’ Socioeconomic at Pasir Mas, Kelantan

Abstract

The high volumes of vehicles especially during peak hours or festive seasons in Pasir Mas, Kelantan has led the government to implement the Bypass Phase 2. Bypass project next to the Pasir Mas’ bridge due to severe traffic congestion during the festive seasons. This study is conducted to identify the business activities and the socioeconomic impacts that occur on the population surrounding the project. The study involved 100 respondents among local people in Pasir Mas, Kelantan by random sampling. The research used quantitative method. The method used is to distribute questionnaire to the respondent and the use of descriptive statistic. The results show that there are various business activities carried out around the project such as restaurant and grocery store. Socioeconomic impacts from the social aspect may see a reduction in traffic congestion, whereas from the economy aspect the project may affect the traders as there are many shops to be demolished for Bypass Phase 2 construction. This study suggests more bypass and highways to be built in Kelantan so that the traffic congestion problem can be overcome during peak hours and festive seasons.
