Abstract

Customs and ‘urf is one of the elements of universal culture of all communities in the world. The Bajaus is the second largest ethnic group in Sabah. Majority of them are Muslims and practice their own unique customs and ‘urf. The acceptance of Islam has caused some assimilation between the Bajaus traditions and Islamic teaching which then led to syncretism. Consequently, some of the practices are regarded as a part of Islamic teachings even though, these practices are actually inherited from their ancestors that are unrelated to Islamic rules provided in the Qur’an and prophetic traditions. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the Bajau customs and ‘urf are in line with Islamic teachings. This study focuses on practices of their beliefs. This is a qualitative study which adopts observation, interviews and data analysis. The finding of this study shows that syncretism occurred among the Bajau community. In light to this, the status of the ritual practiced by Bajau community is analyzed to determine whether it is in line with Islamic principles so that there is a clear guidance on the particular matter.
