Application of Geographic Information System (GIS) in SlopeFailures: A Case Study in Paya Terubong, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

Abstract

A lot of highlands have been developed and this has caused many slope failures. The general study area is located in southwest Penang at blocks PP5, PP7 and PP8. This study was specifically conducted at block PP5 (Paya Terubong) with an area of 54.1 square km in the centre of the Penang Island. The methodology of the study was based on Kamp at al (2008). Every slope failure was marked on a base map and its distribution was spatially analyzed before parameters and weights of each were determined to eventually produce a map of slope failure probability of the study area.
