Abstract

The never-ending issues of solid waste disposals are inevitable. This is mostly due to the fact that we produce waste (either liquid or solid) whenever and wherever we go. This predicament creates complications especially when it involves uncontrolled and inefficient waste disposal management in recreational sites. It is important to highlight the uniqueness and attractive attributes of these tourism sites need to be conserved so that it can be enjoyed as leisure and scenic spots. In view of this, a study was conducted on Pangkor Island since it is one of the main tourism attractions in the country. However, its’ beauty may be flawed if its waste disposals was not managed efficiently. The study found that the existing waste disposal site at Teluk Cempedak has exceeded its capacity. Moreover, in dealing with increasing volume of waste, issue in regard to its incinerator may drive this matter into critical state. As a result, it causes several problems namely water pollution and offensive odours/smell which contributed to air pollution that give negative impression towards the island by tourists. Therefore, several measures need to taken such as finding solutions for the incinerator to be operational, educating the locals and visitors on responsibility of proper garbage disposal and recycling.
