2024-01-19T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 Norazmina Najibah Mohd Sani, Nor Azura Adzharuddin, Mastura Mahamedhttps://ojs.upsi.edu.my/index.php/EJOSS/article/view/9044Ecocritical Reading of Land and Landscape in Muhammad Haji Salleh’s Rowing Down Two Rivers: An eco-consciousness approach2024-02-16T01:27:35+00:00Nurul Huda Abdul Hamidlunxhelenx@gmail.comHamoud Yahya Ahmed Mohsenhamoud@fbk.upsi.edu.my
The Malaysian National Laureate Muhammad Haji Salleh has always been true to his green roots. Even when things are hard, he finds comfort and interest in Motherland's embrace. This paper is aimed to highlight the identity-land symbiotic interconnectedness in Muhammad Haji Salleh’s selected poems through the lens of ecocriticism. In the selected poems we examined the concept of eco-consciousness with the purpose of to better understand how Muhammad Haji Salleh view the concept of personal identity as intrinsically tied to the natural world. Upon detailed analysis of the selected poems, it becomes evident that Muhammad Haji Salleh has never ceased preaching about the plight of the Malaysian land and landscape and the urgent need for worldwide attention. His poetry proves that he utilizes the land and landscape as an iconic form of aspiration and even ecocritically functional and through the application of the concept of eco-consciousness, the researchers conclude that while there are strong and deep connections between humans and their land and landscape, this does not change the fact that humans are more dependent towards nature than vice-versa. The researchers believe that reading more poems by Muhammad Haji Salleh and other Malaysian poets will produce a better and more thorough finding for future research on the topic of the inextricable connection between individual identity and the natural world. Thus, this study shows the implications of developing Malaysian ecocriticism as a means to read literature and to understand the significance of the land-identity attachment in the psyche of Malaysians.
2024-03-07T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 Nurul Huda Abdul Hamid, Hamoud Yahya Ahmed Mohsenhttps://ojs.upsi.edu.my/index.php/EJOSS/article/view/8665The Strength of Islamic Values in Mentoring Entrepreneurs among Lecturers: A Qualitative Study2023-11-24T01:41:38+00:00Noraini Hashimnoraini1378@gmail.comHariyaty Ab Wahidhariyaty@fpe.upsi.my
This article is about the study of Islamic values in mentoring start-up entrepreneurs by lecturers. This study was conducted to explore how attachment to Islamic values can be a strength for mentors in the mentoring process. The research method used was qualitative, using an in-depth, semi-structured interview protocol validated by four inter-raters, and Cohen's Kappa rating was 1.00. The empirical finding in this study is that Islamic values greatly help lecturers become good mentors in guiding and supporting the development of entrepreneurs at the IPT. The main message is that, by adhering to Islamic values, it improves the mentoring process of entrepreneurs among lecturers. The new discovery in this study is that it focuses on the values of mentors and not entrepreneurs. The implications of this research are that it can help universities and organisations develop mentoring programmes that incorporate Islamic values to improve entrepreneurial mentoring processes.

Keywords: entrepreneurship, mentorship, mentor’s competencies, lecturers, Islamic value

2024-04-27T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 Noraini Hashim, Hariyaty Ab Wahidhttps://ojs.upsi.edu.my/index.php/EJOSS/article/view/9848Gender Representation in Indonesian ELT Textbooks: The Hidden Bias2024-07-11T05:22:22+00:00Rani Zahraranizahra03@gmail.comIin Inawatiiin.inawati@mpbi.uad.ac.idKamisah Ariffinkamisah@uitm.edu.my
Empirical research has highlighted the persistence of gender bias over centuries despite the global initiatives to promote gender equality and remove gender bias in various spheres including education. The contents of educational materials like textbooks can exert a crucial role in shaping and reinforcing the learners’ views and perceptions especially about gender roles. Addressing gender bias in textbooks is necessary in fostering a more equitable educational environment equitable, hence, promoting equitable society for future generations. The present study examined gender bias in three ELT Indonesian textbooks for three levels of education (When English Rings a Bell for Grade VII, When English Rings a Bell for Grade VIII, and Think Globally and Act Locally for Grade IX). Specifically, it investigated the distribution, types and the representation of gender bias in these textbooks. It employed both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis to provide a more comprehensive outcomes on the gender bias presented in the textbooks. The findings indicate that gender bias is present in the three textbooks despite the urge by the Directorate General of Legislation and Regulations (2016) that textbooks must be devoid of gender stereotypes, bias, and discrimination. The portrayal of gender in the textbooks reinforces stereotype social constructs where men are depicted in leading and active roles, while women are usually shown in passive or secondary positions. This can affect the learners’ conscious and subconscious views on their own attitude, career choice and social behaviour. To develop educational materials that are free of gender-based stereotypes and reflect balanced representations of both genders, concerted effort from policy makers, educators, authors and publishers are important.
2024-04-28T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 Rani Zahra, Iin Inawati, Kamisah Ariffinhttps://ojs.upsi.edu.my/index.php/EJOSS/article/view/9461Social Media Platform Preferences for Enhancing English Language Skills: A Study of Secondary School and University Students in Selangor2024-07-11T05:16:55+00:00Siti Maftuhah Damiomaftuhah@uitm.edu.myMarion Clarice Tari Patrick2019482164@student.uitm.edu.myIswahyuniiswahyuni@ub.ac.id
The impact of technological advancements, specifically social media, on the enhancement of English language proficiency has garnered mixed responses from individuals, despite the limitations of conventional learning materials in this regard. This study focused on assessing the English language skills of secondary school and university students, revealing positive outcomes. Employing a quantitative approach through the distribution of questionnaires which include objective and subjective questions among students in Selangor, it was observed that both groups favoured YouTube as their preferred platform for language improvement, while Facebook was rated the least favoured by both categories. Regarding the disparities in social media platform preferences and their effects on students' English language skills, the research found no significant differences. This research also aims to highlight the potential of social media platforms in effectively enhancing students' English language skills, and it is hoped that both educators and students can tap into this resource to their advantage.
2024-04-28T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 Siti Maftuhah Damio, Marion Clarice Tari Anak Patrick, Iswahyunihttps://ojs.upsi.edu.my/index.php/EJOSS/article/view/9397Beyond Kimchi and K-Dramas: The Korean Food Phenomenon Among University Students in Malaysia2024-07-13T07:13:20+00:00Zuraida Ramanzuraidaraman@yahoo.comGuat Im Bokguatim@usm.my
Since the airing of Winter Sonata in Malaysia in 2002, the Korean Wave, or Hallyu, has become increasingly popular among Malaysians, especially the younger generation. This study aims to understand the attitudes and perceptions of Malaysian university students towards Korean cuisine and explore the factors motivating their interest in it. The study employed quantitative methods using a survey instrument. The respondents were university students at Universiti Sains Malaysia who had consumed Korean food before. The survey was distributed to students via email and social media and a total of 82 students responded to the survey. The study found that mass media, especially Korean dramas and entertainment, significantly shaped university students' food choices. Environmental factors such as the accessibility and availability of Korean food surrounding the university also affected its popularity. Peers played an important role, while family factors had less influence on the popularity of Korean food. Overall, the findings suggest that Korean cuisine is popular among Malaysian youths due to various factors such as media influence, accessibility, and peer influence. These findings highlight the multifaceted nature of global culture among Malaysian youths. As globalisation continues to fade borders and connect people, the study of the perception and acceptance of foreign cultures and their culinary traditions, especially among youth, becomes increasingly important in understanding the intricacy of cultural exchange.
2024-04-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 Zuraida Raman, Bok Guat Imhttps://ojs.upsi.edu.my/index.php/EJOSS/article/view/9804Likert Measurement Scale in Education and Social Sciences: Explored and Explained 2024-09-24T06:01:07+00:00Nor Roselidyawaty Mohd Rokemanroselidyawati@moe.edu.my
Surveys are fundamental research tools extensively used by researchers and academic experts across various fields. Their significance lies in their ability to give respondents autonomy in evaluating presented items. An essential part of crafting an effective survey involves carefully selecting scaling methods during the instrument construction phase. This study conducts a narrative literature review to analyse existing findings on the use of Likert scales, mapping out how these scales are applied to understand the interplay between scale divisions in social sciences research. Likert scales are popular in diverse fields, including social sciences, psychology, politics, and economics. However, existing methodologies for instrument construction often lack a comprehensive depiction of the most suitable scales for specific studies. This paper aims to address this gap by providing guidance and enhancing understanding for researchers in selecting appropriate and relevant scales, particularly within the context of their research topics. Findings suggest that a more systematic approach to scale selection can improve research efficacy. Recommendations include developing standardized guidelines to aid researchers in choosing optimal scales for their studies, ensuring both methodological rigor and relevance to the research questions.
2024-04-30T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2024 Nor Roselidyawaty Mohd Rokeman
