Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify the level of traffic noise in selected residential areas located in the Selangor Northern Corridor (SNC) involving 16 observation stations. The observations were carried out on working and non-working days, which include morning, afternoon, evening and night. The parameters taken into consideration are the maximum value (Max), minimum (Min) and average (Leq). Data traffic noise observed at each station coverage area of the noise distribution using regression methods in geographic information system (GIS) that is interpolation Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW). ArcGIS 93 is used as a tool to analyze the distribution of sound interpolation. The study found that on weekdays all areas at SNC recorded the noise value exceeding the standard of the Department of Environment (DOE) which is 65 dBA at any time observed except Bandar Sungai Buaya in the morning and noon. The situation is almost the same on the non-working days but the level of noise recorded does not exceed the DOE standard which is in the morning and evening in the same area of Bandar Sungai Buaya. Overall, it appears that countless and increasing number of vehicles are the major contributors of traffic noise pollution in residential areas and causing SNC interruptions to the surrounding population. Therefore, appropriate action either from the legal and non-legal viewpoint needs to be done to resolve this issue.
